The Christmas plates from Royal Copenhagen have been issued every year since 1908 and are still being issued to this day, each one with a unique motif. Each motif is meticulously brought to life through hundreds of little grooves, carvings and engravings that require the artist to have complete mastery of the craft.
The relief for the motif of the Royal Copenhagen Christmas plates is handmade by the most talented modelling artists based on the designer’s drawing, and the plates are produced with utmost respect for the proud tradition of the craft. Over the years, different artists have designed the motifs for the Christmas plates.

Royal Copenhagen released its first Mother's Day plate in 1971. Until 1974 the plates represented a stylized version of a mother with child from different parts of the world, designed by Kamma Svensson. From 1975 till 1977 it was Arne Ungermann who showed his versions of motherhood on the plates, followed by the famous drawings by Ib Spang Olsen who had the same honour until 1982 .
