Our tableware has lasted for many years and may show some signs of wear and tear. After all, back in the early days, it was mainly designed and produced for household use. Any item on offer in our webshop has been thoroughly checked for irregularities and damages. It goes without saying that we do not sell any articles that haven't stood the test of time. Since some of the items were produced more than 50 years ago, we accept however, that they may show some signs of wear and tear. Even though we try to find immaculate pieces, it is unrealistic to expect a brand new condition of tableware of that age. In the articles' descriptions we therefore decided to use the following quality gradings: ∙ mint/excellent/(very) good condition: the item barely shows any signs of wear and tear;
∙ used condition: the item has visible signs of wear and tear, for instance, a spot or scratches in the glazing, discoloration or some minor cracking, however, the article is not damaged in any way;
∙ slightly damaged: the item is slightly damaged, for example, a crack or cracking/craquelure, a tiny chip ('fleabite'), or some other flaw. In this case, the degree of the damage will be amplified in the article's description under 'Remarks'.
We have done our utmost to describe the items in our webshop in the most accurate way. However, the article that you order and receive is not necessarily the article that is depicted on our website. It may be an identical article of comparable quality. Should you have any questions, or like to receive more information about an item, then please do not hesitate to contact us. We will answer your questions as quickly as possible.

With this online shop we try to contribute to greater sustainability and social awareness. As a small company, we do this in the following ways:

Purchasing
Many of the items offered in our online shop are purchased from non-profit thrift stores, such as the second-hand shops of the Salvation Army, the Red Cross, church organizations and other charity shops. The proceeds of these shops go to good causes in order to combat poverty or to provide financial support in conflict areas. The shops are often run by volunteers and/or people with a labour market disadvantage.Selling
All the tableware we sell is second-hand and therefore used. By selling this, the tableware is given a second or third life, thanks to the high quality of the original production, which gives it a longer lifespan and prevents it from ending up in the waste dump.Packaging
With the environment in mind, all orders are packaged in biobased bubble wrap with the 'I'm Green' hallmark, biodegradable filling material made from plant-based starch and they are shipped in environmentally friendly sourced cardboard boxes. In addition, we try to package orders as compactly as possible to avoid excess waste, but at the same time ensure that the often fragile items arrive to you sufficiently protected and intact.

In 1873 the Finnish factory Arabia started off with the manufacture of porcelain and earthenware on a plot of land carrying the same name on the northern outskirts of Helsinki. Being a subsidiary of the Swedish ceramics factory Rörstrand, it was up to Arabia to serve the Russian market in a period of boom. After the successful World Fair, which was held in Paris in 1900, a period of economic decline began and demand from Russia and North America for porcelain and earthenware from Finland started to slacken off. At the end of WW I, Arabia was passed into Finnish hands and a period of prosperity began. In 1929, the factory took over parent company Rörstrand. After the economic depression in 1932, demand for earthenware and porcelain collapsed and the company started to pioneer by automatising the production process and improving efficiency. During WW II the factory had expanded enormously and employed some 2,000 workers. Kaj Franck was hired in 1945 who designed and introduced the Kilta range in the early 50s, a leading example of the modernisation process, involving new concepts relating to kitchen ware that a household might need. This took Arabia into the realm of modern communication and advisory work which included educating the public, consultation and press services. In addition to the Kilta range, other new products came on the market including Heini (Kaarina Aho/Raija Uosikkinen, 1957) and Liekki by Ulla Procopé (1958). A new production material, stoneware, was introduced into Arabia’s household range. The first tableware set made from the new material was Ulla Procopé’s Ruska, well-known worldwide. The much-loved Paratiisi series by Birger Kaipiainen was launched in 1969.The oil crisis and the problems caused by cheap imports led to cut-backs in personnel and the product range. They were also the reason for a three-year period (1975-1977) of collaboration in marketing between Arabia and Rörstrand. The production of annual plates with a Kalevala theme by Raija Uosikkinen was launched in 1976. New lines in tableware included Karelia (Anja Jaatinen-Winquist 1970), Faenza (Peter Winquist 1973), Tea for Two (Gunvor Olin-Grönqvist 1978) and Arctica (Inkeri Leivo 1979). The latter being the first set of tableware to emerge from the tunnel kilns that was made from a new material, vitro porcelain. Kaj Franck modernised his Kilta series, which was relaunched under the name Teema in 1981. Other novelties included Tuuli (Heljä Liukko-Sundström 1983), Saaristo (Inkeri Leivo 1985), Microset (Göran Bäck 1986), Teema (Kaj Franck 1987), Domino (Kati Tuominen/Pekka Paikkari 1987) and Harlekin (Inkeri Leivo 1989).
Arabia's owner company Wärtsilä acquired Rörstrand in 1984, and six years later, Arabia was taken over by Hackman.In 2000, the company name changed into Iittala, followed by a take-over by the Fiskars Group in 2007. Arabia, however, remains to be Finland's most valued and well-known brand to this day.

Rörstrand was founded in Stockholm in 1726, but its international breakthrough was only in 1900 when the company exhibited at the Paris World Fair. The factory expanded, moved to Gothenburg, came into hands of Arabia Finland for a short time before it became independent again in 1931. A few years later, the factory moved to Lidköping. During that period, Rörstrand had already established an international reputation with its classic tableware Swedish Grace, designed by Louise Adelborg. From then on, the company decided to work together with artists and designers more frequently, such as Gunnar Nylund, whose designs would eventually lead to mass production. In 1932 another classic tableware was introduced – Ostindia – commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Swedish East India Company. This tableware is still being produced to this day. In the late 30s, Carl-Harry Stålhane was hired. He experimented with various styles and techniques and had a great influence on the development of Rörstrand's designs up until the 70's.It was in 1941 that Hertha Bengtson started her career as an artist at the porcelain factory. The services Blå eld and Koka blå she designed, are nowadays considered to be classics. Marianne Westman, who began working at Rörstrand in 1950, would become one of the company's most popular designers. Services such as Mon Amie, Picknick and Pomona sold like hot cakes. It is said that Westman's products generated 45% of the company's turnover. The 50s would become the golden era for the porcelain factory. Rörstrand was then purchased by the Upsala-Ekeby Group in 1964 and a period had come in which turnover suffered a severe setback, followed by massive redundancies in the early 70s. In 1975, the Upsala-Ekeby Group, consisting of Upsala-Ekeby, Rörstrand, Gefle and Egersund, was taken over by Arabia. In the next years, some other taking-overs occurred until Rörstrand merged with Iittala in 2003/2004. At the end of 2005, the Rörstrand factory in Lidköping closed down and production was relocated to Hungary and Sri Lanka. The Rörstrand museum is currently located on the site where the factory used to be.

Stavangerflint was a Norwegian factory that started its production of pottery tableware in English flint in 1949, both for consumers and businesses. The improved market conditions and growing domestic demand for tableware shortly after the end of WW II were the basis of the foundation of Stavanger Fajansefabrikk. Under this name, the company developed a clay mixture and production process creating a new quality of flintware that would later be known as Stavangerflint. It was based on a recipe invented in England around 1750 by Josiah Wedgwood. The factory used the name of this material to market its products as strong and durable. In 1952, Stavanger Fajansefabrikk changed its name into Stavangerflint A/S. By adding the word 'flint' to the company name, the quality angle of the products would be enhanced. Eventually, the factory merged with its competitor Figgjo Fajanse A/S in 1968, but continued to produce its goods under its own name. In the late 70s, the factory closed down and production was taken over by Figgjo A/S.Signed works by Turi Gramstad Oliver, Kari Nyquist, Gro Pedersen Claussen, Anne Lofthus and Inger Waage have created great interest among collectors in Norway and abroad.

Figgjo Kraftselskap A/S was founded in 1941 by Harald Lima and Sigurd Figved. Five years later, the first tunnel kiln was put into operation which is still in use today as a glaze kiln. In 1947, the factory converted to the production of glazed earthenware. The company changed its name into Figgjo Fajanse two years after that, and started exporting to Denmark and England in 1951. In the early 60s another conversion took place. The company began to produce vitro porcelain that was specially developed for the hospitality industry. In 1968, Figgjo Fajanse merged with Stavangerflint A/S, its biggest competitor. Six years later, merger negotiations were started with Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik but ended in failure. Stavangerflint's factory closed down in 1979 and production was taken over by Figgjo Fajanse that subsequently changed its name into Figgjo A/S. The factory is still known by this name and continues to produce glazed porcelain for the Norwegian market and the hospitality industry to this very day.

Egersund Fayanse was founded in 1847 under the name Egersunds Potteri by Johan Feyer who himself was a pottery maker, trained in Newcastle upon Tyne. Feyer brought English pottery makers to Egersund to teach the craft to local workers. For the first 20 years, the factory produced the brown pottery that this region is known for made from local clay. In 1851 the factory had 26 employees.In 1863 Feyer started the transformation process to start producing white pottery, the so-called fajanse, and the factory was renamed Egersunds Fayancefabrik. They hired Swedish pottery makers from Rörstrand and English labourers. The faience was produced out of a mixture of clay, kaolin, Danish flint and Norwegian quartz. The first years, pottery with a simple decor were made, often transfer prints, inspired by other makers, magazines and so on. Eventually, the company developed a strong artistic profile, and were associated with artists like Kitty Kielland, Jacob Sømme (who designed one of their most iconic products, the Puffin jug), Oluf Wold-Torne, Andreas Schneider, Andreas Ollestad, Jacob Bjorheim and Theodor Friestad. Alongside everyday household products, they also made more prestigious pieces, like enormous vases for exhibitions. The factory burned down in 1905, but was rebuilt in 1907 with bigger capacity and electrical power. It expanded profoundly in 1950 to meet the demands of the post-war years, and the work force were close to 500. The harsh demands of mass production eventually forced them to join forces with other companies. In 1967, the factory merged with Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik, from 1975-77 they were owned by Arabia and from 1978 by Upsala-Ekeby, until they were closed down in 1979.

Jie-Keramik was founded in 1942 in Helsingborg by John Ewert 'Jie' Johnson and initially produced small wooden objects that were furnished with glass or ceramics. The company expanded rapidly and moved to a larger location in Gantofta in 1944. As from 1952, Johnson started to produce ceramics for household use, at first according to traditional methods, but soon the products were manufactured by means of casting moulds and then painted by hand by several designers, such as Ella Bergstrand and Anita Nylund. When this technique became too expensive, the factory began to use silk-screen prints in order to apply decorations to its products. All designs by Anita Nylund were applied according to this method, although the pottery was still produced by Jie himself. Instead of majolica, products were now being made of glazed earthenware. In the mid 60s, the company stopped the production of household goods and switched to the manufacturing of decorative goods. The first designer who was hired for that reason was Elsi Bourelius. She mainly designed female figures made of ceramics. The production of wooden objects, however, remained an important discipline for Jie and lasted until well into the 80s.
Aimo Nietosvuori started working as a designer at Jie in 1967. The decorative tiles he made for the company, became bestsellers. Many designers launching new products followed him with varying success until the 80s, such as Annika Kihlman, Solveig en Siegfried Uelzhöfer, Maria Ericson, Edith Risberg and Bengt Nilsson. Staffan Johnson returned to his father's company and started working as a designer. His interest in ornithology resulted in many designs representing birds.In 1992, Jie Gantofta celebrated its 50th anniversary, but later that year the company went bankrupt and production was transferred abroad, especially to Portugal.

Two men deserve most of the credit for establishing Norway’s only china factory in Porsgrund in 1885: Johan Jeremiassen, the man who had sufficient faith in his own idea to invest his considerable wealth in the venture, and Carl Maria Bauer, the technical expert and porcelain specialist, who used his sound professional expertise to direct the factory’s construction and to plan production in the crucial early years. The first batch of china was fired on 10 February 1887.Porsgrund today is a proud tradition bearer and heir to a treasured cultural legacy. Porsgrund’s products reflect the evolution of style over the past century through the designs of the many celebrated Norwegian artists who have undertaken commissions for the factory.For more than 120 years, the factory has focused on producing prestigious, top-quality products, gaining an excellent reputation for design, quality and craftsmanship. We now see more and more of its sets becoming historical artifacts or cherished heirlooms.Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik AS is currently still owned by Atle Brynestad and is part of the 3 Norske AS group. Sister companies in the group include Hadeland Glassverk and Christiania Glasmagasin.

KAJ FRANCK (born 1911 in Viipuri, Finland, died 1989 in Greece) graduated in 1932 in interior design from the Institute of Industrial Art. Until the Second World War, he worked in interior and textile design for various companies, and after the war, he began work at the Arabia factory as a designer of utilitarian wares. The shortage of raw materials and the severe economic situation that prevailed in Finland at the time and coincided with major social upheaval created new initiatives and requirements for design.

Franck's BA/Kilta tableware, which went on sale in 1953, has been regarded as one of the first expressions of this new design ideology. At Arabia, Franck came to be surrounded by gifted young designers, and gradually the factory's Product Design Department benefited from Arabia's solid expertise and professionalism. The product design team, which comprised Franck, wheel-turner Göran Bäck, model draughtsman Kaarina Aho, and ceramist Ulla Procopé, collaborated in the creation of a new line of utilitarian wares that were purely practical and functional in design.

The department followed Franck's idea that the designer should remain anonymous, because the output of a ceramics factory always involved mass-produced items designed through teamwork. The factory's renowned manufacturing tradition lived on in the basic-level functionalist tableware produced by Franck and his design team that imitated folk ceramics and traditional tableware in their practicality.

The young Irishwoman became early fascinated by Nordic nature, which was often expressed in her artistic work. At Rorstrand, Lynd came to make several tableware together with Carl-Harry Stålhane, where Lynd designed the decor and Stålhane was responsible for the tableware model. Nordica (1978-1987) was the tableware by Stålhane and Lynd that sold best. She also had success with her own tableware such as Isolde (1976-1985) and Japonica (1977-1982). The collaboration with Rörstrand ended in 1990.

ULLA PROCOPÉ (born 1921 in Helsinki, died 1968 in Tenerife) graduated as a ceramist from the Central School of Arts and Crafts and began work at the Arabia factory's hand-painting department under Olga Osol, from where she moved after two years to the model and decoration department.

Procopé resumed work at Arabia in 1956 at the factory's Product Design Department, where she made a significant contribution as a designer at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s together with Kaarina Aho and Kaj Franck. Ulla Procopé worked at Arabia until 1967. Underlying her commercially popular designs was her successful cooperation with model makers, the factory's laboratory, and the kiln attendants. She was also a skilled wheel-turner and she designed the decoration of her pieces mostly on ceramic models by painting and using decals.

She also carried out many firing experiments. Procopé's best-known designs are the Liekki oven bowl collection, the ND tableware service with the hand-painted Valencia motif in cobalt blue, and the S service with Ruska decoration, in which Arabia used matte glaze for the first time in mass-produced utility ware.

Her ability to design and create functioning models from ceramic paste was significant for the success of Arabia in the 1950s and 1960s. During her career, Ulla Procopé participated in numerous exhibitions of design in Finland and abroad.

ESTERI TOMULA (born 1920 in Helsinki, died 1998 in Helsinki) began work at Arabia in 1947 as an ornamental painter in the factory's Decoration Department, and she continued as a designer of decoration from 1963 to 1984. Originally trained as a porcelain painter at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, she was primarily a prolific decorator and with only a few exceptions, did not design objects for the factory. Esteri Tomula's motifs were versions of flowers, plants, and mushrooms, which she painted in large numbers, but only a fraction of them were approved at the factory's production planning meetings. The decoration was painted by hand at the factory, as in the case of porcelain handles for fruit knives, or with serigraphic or copperplate printing techniques for mass production.

Finel, which belonged to the same group as Arabia, made numerous enamelled kitchenware items, for which Tomula designed decoration matching the ceramic tableware. Esteri Tomula's best-known anthropomorphic decorative motifs were for the Eskimo and Lappalainen (Lapp) shakers from the late 1960s and early 1970s, and her Pastoraali (Pastoral) motif from the 1950s.

RAIJA UOSIKKINEN (born in 1923 in Hollola, died 2004 in Helsinki) studied porcelain painting at the Central School of Arts and Crafts from 1944 to 1947. She worked as a decorative painter and decoration designer at Arabia from 1947 to 1986.

Raija Uosikkinen and Esteri Tomula played a prominent role as decoration designers when Arabia renewed its product line in the late 1940s and the 1950s. Uosikkinen designed decoration motifs for many tableware items created by Kaj Franck for mass production. The motifs for the B-model tableware, such as Polaris and Linnea, were popular, as were the light and playful Emilia.

Ali, the Arabia factory's last copperplate-printed decorative motif, was also designed by Uosikkinen. Arabia began to make a wide range of collectibles in the 1970s, and Raija Uosikkinen designed two of the factory's principal series of collectible plate: the Kalevala annual plates beginning in 1976 and the Christmas plate series from 1978. During her career, Uosikkinen took part in many Finnish and foreigh exhibitions. In addition to her work, she taught at the Toimela Adult Education Institute and the University of Art and Design Helsinki.

There's no doubt about it: MON AMIE is one of the most favourite coffee sets that have ever been produced in Sweden. On a rainy midsummer day in the late 1940s, Marianne Westman was drawing a white Labrador tea flower. The floral pattern that she designed only acquired a cobalt blue nuance after the tableware was first launched in 1952. The decor immediately became a best seller and was taken into production until 1987. MON AMIE was updated and relaunched in 2008, celebrating Marianne Westman's 80th birthday. The items displayed here, however, originate from the previous production period.
